This taster course offers students the opportunity to establish underpinning knowledge and understanding of British Sign Language and to develop fundamental deaf awareness.
With an estimated 125,000 deaf adults and up to 20,000 children using BSL in the UK, this will give you a useful additional workplace skill, helping you to understand and communicate with deaf clients, customers or colleagues across all sectors.
This course will cover the following elements:
- BSL alphabet and numbers
- General conversation vocabulary including core topics such as family
- Deaf awareness and culture
The sessions will be fun and practical to create interactive learning. As this is a taster course there will be no final examination but students can request a certificate of attendance on completion of the course.
The course will consist of six 2 hour sessions. It will take place on the Gipsy Lane site on Thursdays, 5.30pm – 7.30pm, starting 5th of October.
The full cost of the course is £40.
Your trainer will be Wendy Hunter, who has worked as a qualified Communication Support Worker for over 10 years and supports deaf and hearing impaired students in colleges in Oxford and around the county. She is experienced in teaching BSL to families who have deaf children through involvement in the Sign Up Project. She holds a level 3 qualification in British Sign Language.
