Confucius Institute

Set up to promote Chinese language and culture, the Confucius Institute at Oxford Brookes University aims to enhance mutual understanding and reinforce international friendships. The Confucius Institute is running courses in Chinese language and culture for the general public, and hosting events throughout the year. The Institute has a particular focus on publishing, a prominent local industry in Oxfordshire.

BrookesEdge - Chinese course

Description

This free course is for OBU students only and is part of BrookesEdge. Classes are 2 hours per week.

January - March 2026 timetable:

Level 2 - running on Fridays 2-4 pm for 10 weeks. This class is running on campus.

Level 2 - running on Fridays 6-8 pm for 10 weeks. This class is online.

Level 4 - running on Wednesdays 6-8pm for 10 weeks. This class is online.

Please select the correct level for you - once you complete a term (10 weeks) you will move to the next level.

Students must have a valid student number and OBU email to enrol.

Calligraphy

Chinese Calligraphy

Description

This course is for students to build upon their basic knowledge of Chinese calligraphy. The course will cover basic strokes, stroke orders and character arrangement. If you have taken our previous calligraphy courses, this one will have new characters so you should still be able to join. 

Students will be provided with their own brush, ink and calligraphy paper for the course.

Course time: Tuesdays 5:30-7:00pm

Please note a minimum of 3 students is required to run this course.

We also offer a Calligraphy bundle for £10 alongside this course.

Included in the bundle: 

  • 2 Calligraphy brushes
  • 1 water mat 
  • 1 brush rest 
  • Xuan paper 

This bundle will be £10 in total and we will provide it to you at your first class. The bundle doesn't include ink.

As usual our classes will be able to provide all the materials so don't worry if you aren't interested in purchasing this optional bundle.

GCSE Chinese Children's course - Online

Description

Classes are 1.5 hours per week, on Tuesdays 7-8:30pm.  This course is designed for children under 15-year-old with Chinese language speaking background aiming to enhance their daily Chinese listening, speaking, reading and writing.

This lesson is online. 

This GCSE lesson aims at tutoring the GCSE Mandarin curriculum to UK immigrant Chinese students who plan to take the GCSE exam in the near future. We cover all topic areas from the GCSE course specification, with interactive activties, exercises, games and more! The GCSE exam technique and how to complete the exam will also be talked about throughout the course.
