Course Description

This module offers a clear introduction to the global systems, laws and institutions that underpin the protection of human rights and refugees. Learners will engage critically with major policy and academic debates, using real-world, practice-based analysis to explore how these issues play out across different contexts.

The course has a strong practical focus, drawing on resources from the UN, international NGOs and research grounded in local communities. Several sessions are delivered by practitioners currently working in the field, giving students direct insight into current challenges and approaches.

Teaching methods are interactive and engaging, including classroom debates, simulation exercises and discussion groups. Students will also have the opportunity to design and run their own awareness campaign on a related topic.

While contemporary global crises are addressed, they are examined within wider political, social and legal frameworks, with particular attention to gendered perspectives and the voices of marginalised groups.

Assessments are practical and career-focused, aimed at building employability skills such as writing policy briefs and evaluating human rights campaigns, including work conducted for the OHF.
