Course Description

   

This course offers a rare, practice-focused introduction to three key areas of the development and humanitarian sector: conflict transformation, challenges to humanitarian action and human rights violations in conflict settings. Beginning with the foundations of conflict analysis, the course explores the impact of climate change on humanitarian work and concludes with an examination of transitional justice and approaches to redress.

Taught by experienced practitioners and grounded in research from conflict-affected communities, the course draws on UN and international NGO resources to provide real-world insight. Teaching is interactive, with debates, simulations and discussion groups that deepen understanding. Assessments are practical and career-oriented, including tasks such as conducting a conflict analysis to strengthen professional skills.

Delivery dates: 12 weeks starting 29 January 2026

Sessions: 12 six hour sessions once a week

Schedule: Every Thursday for 12 weeks

Instructor: Sessions will be led by Dr Brigitte Piquard, Paul Knox Clarke and Dr Farah Mihlar together with a range of specialist lecturers working in the sector.
